    You are entitled to a minimum of 8 hours of annual OH&S training, as mandated by the Workers Compensation Act, Section 41. In addition, within your first 6 months of being appointed as an OH&S representative, you must receive 8 hours of Basic OH&S Training (OHS Regulations, Section 3.27). Our “Basic OH&S Committee Training” course fulfills the requirements for the initial training.

    You must have approval from your employer prior to applying for this EMPLOYER PAID training. We are unable to provide a union paid LOA for this course.

    Basic Committee Training – Labour Code
    This is an introductory course offered to union appointed committee members. BCGEU Courses are also open to employer representatives. This course is a prerequisite for all other BCGEU OH&S courses. It is a must for new committee members and a refresher for those with experience.

    In this course, you will learn:

    • 4 worker rights – Right to Know, Right to Participate, Right to Refuse Unsafe Work and Right to Protection from Prohibited Actions   
    • Introduction to the Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulation
    • Roles and responsibilities of the employer, supervisor, workers and committees
    • Hazard identification and control measures
    • Introduction to workplace inspections and incident investigations
    • Committee structure, job description and committee evaluations

    An incident happens at your workplace and you suddenly get a call to participate in an investigation. What do you do? What is the purpose of an investigation? What is required? This course will answer all these questions and provide you with the opportunity to improve your investigative skills. Please ensure that you are a union appointed committee member, and that you have taken the prerequisite Basic Committee Training course prior to registering for this course.

    In this course, you will learn:

    The legal requirements for conducting accident/incident investigations in a timely mannerJoint investigations with employer and worker representative participationThe 7 step process – secure the scene, collect data, develop the sequence of events, determine the causes, recommendations, write the report, refer other hazards discovered during this process to OH&S committeeEffective interviewing skillsReview of multiple causes often involvedRecommendations and effective control measures

    Women's Health and Safety in the Workplace (This course is open to all genders)

    All workers face health and safety issues at work but many of these issues affect women in particular ways. This course provides participants with the opportunity to develop their ability to identify, assess and control workplace hazards from a woman's perspective. Please ensure that you are a union appointed committee member, and that you have taken the prerequisite Basic Committee Training course prior to registering for this course.

    In this course, you will learn:

    • How women's physical and psychological health is affected by toxic workplace substances, work design, and work organization.
    • Workplace stressors such as inequity, domestic and gender based violence, sexual harassment, shiftwork.
    • Human rights legislation which requires the employer to address workplace hazards that predominately affect women.
    • How pregnancy and menopause can impact women's safety at work.

    In order to receive a certificate of completion for these courses, you are required to attend for the full day.

    Workplace Ergonomics
    How can we prevent those aches, pains and strains that are caused by work? This course is intended to provide basic ergonomic information to committee members and to explain risk factors and employer responsibilities around mitigating risk of injury from identified risk factors. This course is a must for all types of work. Please ensure that you are a union appointed committee member, and that you have taken the prerequisite Basic Committee Training course prior to registering for this course.

    In this course, you will learn:

    • What the employer is responsible for under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, Ergonomics
    • Identification of ergonomic hazards, risk factors and to advise, suggest possible solutions
    • Strategies for recommending corrective measures
    • Ergonomic issues in offices, mobile workplaces, the healthcare, highway, and social service sectors

    In order to receive a certificate of completion for these courses, you are required to attend for the full day.

    Anti-bullying and Harassment Training

    Bullying has become such a concern that government, unions and workplaces are recognizing the issue of bullying must be dealt with. We now have legislation, and many organizations have policy and/or collective agreement language, but we need training to fully understand the issue of bullying and what to do about it as workers, as employers and as a union. This course will educate and provide you with the skills to address bullying in the workplace in order to make it a safe and comfortable place to work.

    In this course, you will learn:

    • Definition of what is bullying and what is not considered bullying
    • Causes of bullying
    • Legal requirements – Workers Compensation Board and collective agreement language
    • How to address the issue
    • Social media and cyber-bullying or harassment
