Area 01 - Workshop on Labour Activism and Music
588 Burnside Rd E Victoria, BC V8T 2X7 Canada
Greetings BCGEU Members,
From folk songs to hip hop to protest chants, music has long been a part of the labour and activist movement all over the world.
Area 01 Cross Component Committee would like to invited you to a special workshop on Thursday, December 14, 2023 intended to explore, create and invigorate this musical tradition. In this workshop, there is no previous musical experience required; in any way shape or form; simply a desire to express and participate. If you just want to sing, you can sing!
If you play an acoustic instrument (guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, fiddle or bass) please bring them along! You will be provided with the lyrics and chords for the songs so everyone can join in.
In this workshop we will be focusing on 4-5 songs. We will look at the history and content of the song, and ways to continue to make them relevant today. Lyrics can always be modified and adapted, but some of these songs are as true today as they were 100 years ago!
If you would like to acquaint yourself with the songs prior to coming out, please let us know so we can connect you with resources.
We hope to see many of you there and share in the joy of song, build solidarity and have some fun.
Snacks and drinks will be provided.
We hope to see you there!
In solidarity,
Peter Janz, Shop Steward & Recording Secretary, Local 301
and the Area 01 Cross Component Committee
