Whether you're a brand new BCGEU member or you've been a member for a while, this STEP UP! workshop for those working in Victoria, will introduce you to our union and help you develop your skills and knowledge around your rights as a worker and the role the union plays in supporting workers, their families, and our communities. Through stories of courage and strength, you will gain the clarity and support you need along with some useful union tools and strategies to get started with the BCGEU. You will leave feeling more informed, confident, and ready to connect with your co-workers. §A union-paid leave-of-absence is provided for this course. §Reasonable child and/or other dependent care expenses may be reimbursed.
The union will be hosting an enhanced steward training day for all BCGEU Local 103 Stewards on Wednesday, April 24 at the Lower Mainland Area Office in East Vancouver.
The Enhanced Stewards' Course is an annual refresher course for existing stewards. We will be using this day to inform, discuss and connect and develop greater capacity to represent our members in the workplace. All Local 103 stewards are eligible and encouraged to attend this one-day training to update your stewarding skills.
To attend, stewards must be scheduled to work April 24 and are responsible for requesting union leave from their employer for the day with sufficient notice. The BCGEU provides paid union leave for one day.
The topics covered in this course will be determined by surveying the stewards who RSVP by the deadline. Possible topics may include: the role of the steward, grievance 101, BCGEU Constitution Article 7 - Discipline…
Registration is limited, so please RSVP by no later than Friday April 12.
Your RSVP must include:
- your employer-paid hours needed for your leave of absence for Wednesday April 24 and/or
- travel requirements to attend this course, if applicable.
- Lunch will be provided so also please advise if you have any dietary restrictions.

Parking codes that provide free parking at the BCGEU Lower Mainland Area Office are also available upon request.

STEP UP! Online
Whether you're a brand new BCGEU member or you've been a member for a while, this STEP UP! Online workshop will introduce you to our union and help you develop your skills and knowledge around your rights as a worker and the role the union plays in supporting workers, their families, and our communities. Through stories of courage and strength, you will gain the clarity and support you need along with some useful union tools and strategies to get started with the BCGEU. You will leave feeling more informed, confident, and ready to connect with your co-workers.
After finishing the STEP UP! Online workshop, you will …
• Know the story of the BCGEU and why unions matter
• Be able to build your sense of identity and solidarity as a worker and a member of the BCGEU
• Learn how to support and champion the union at work
• Understand how power works in the workplace and society
• Know how to use available union tools to build worker power
• Discover opportunities to get more involved in the BCGEU
To join this online training, you will need:
→ a computer with internal audio or external speakers, a microphone and built-in camera
→ a high-speed internet connection
→ a relatively quiet space, a pad of paper and a pen and a copy of your collective agreement
You can request a union-paid leave of absence from your employer for this training. We will send you a leave-of-absence form to submit to your supervisor.

STEWARD FUNDAMENTALS TRAINING
DATE: Monday, April 29, 2024 & Tuesday, April 30, 2024

Steward Fundamentals is our two-day foundation-level course for all Stewards in our Leadership, Education and Activism Program (LEAP). It will introduce you to your key roles and responsibilities as a steward and help you develop the essential skills you will need. Through discussion, interactive group activities and role-plays, you will be introduced to the key roles and responsibilities of a steward as advocate, educator, organizer and communicator. Stewards will leave feeling more confident and effective in their role and skillful in their interactions with members and the employer.
· Priority will be given to Stewards who have not received this training, or not in the past 4 years.
· A union-paid leave of absence is provided for this course. (Include hours of work details in your RSVP) Please get approval from your supervisor prior to registering.
· Reasonable child and/or other dependent care expenses may be reimbursed.
**NOTE: In your RSVP, hotel accommodation is available for April 28 & 29 to members attending from Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, Hudson's Hope & Fort Nelson. Lunch will be provided to all attendees. Please indicate in your RSVP if you have any allergies or special dietary requirements.**
